September is a fun time for many children as they are excited about the new school year. But for some, the new school year can be overwhelming. Going to a new school, having a new teacher, or simply being in a new classroom can take some children months to get used to.
Here are some strategies to support your child if they have anxiety about starting the new school year:
- Set up a schedule. Make a visual schedule. Include the time your child has to wake up, the time the bus comes to pick them up, and the time that they come home from school. Have your child decorate it the way they want to make it more fun for them.
- Engage in a sensory activity before and after school. Help your child calm their nerves by having them engage in a sensory activity before and after school. Examples include going for a walk outside, pushing a laundry basket, squeezing your child with a cushion, taking deep breaths, or squeezing a favorite stuffed animal.
- Keep a consistent bedtime. Good quality sleep is essential for your child’s body to remain regulated throughout the day and to be able to attend school activities.
- Talk to your child about their fears. Simply listening to your child explain why the new school year makes them nervous will make them feel validated and know that they have support to handle their anxiety.
